1. BackgroundThe goal of this research proposal is to evaluate the effect of the BEL Valves annual performance appraisal on employee’s motivation, namely the Service Technicians within the Aftermarket Department and also investigate the relationship between performance appraisals and employee motivation.Performance appraisals have been utilised within BEL Valves for over 40 years and where previously they were linked to wages and as a first tool in possible disciplinary action they are now used as a tool to assess employee performance. They are intended to be used as a tool to bring changes in employee performance and as an opportunity for employees to participate, resolve all kinds of work related issues including job recognition, performance concerns, timekeeping concerns etc… It is also an instrument to give confidence and praised strong performers to continue their exceptional performance and motivate poor performers to do better job at the workplace. The further objective of these reviews is to identify employee training and development needs.The appraisal system format is a product of the BEL Valves HR department and the content agreed at the board level between the various managing directors that make up the companies of the British Engines Group, of which BEL Valves is a member company.
