Types of police corruption

Types of police corruption
There are eight types of police corruption: corruption of authority, kickbacks, shakedowns, opportunistic theft, the fix, protection of illegal activities, internal pay-offs, and direct criminal activities. Breakdown of authority is when police officers get free meals and drinks and their particular treatment because they are police officers, whether international or internationally, they always display the image of corruption (Ivković et al., 2019). This is seen in many places where police officers use their rank to get many things as gratitude, and they even don’t care whether they are taking from a poor person who depends on it to feed their families. Another type of police corruption is kickbacks, where the police officer receives a fee to refer to a business offender (Albrecht, 2017). This is when police officers are paid to refer to anyone they have arrested in their offices, and journalists or attorneys usually pay them. Police look for dangerous suspects and know all their business, and they use it to get money. They are paid first to tell anyone the information they know about a particular business offender, implying corruption. A police officer can name a price of up to $1500 for a bit of information (Prprović et al., 2021).
The third type of police corruption is shakedowns, where a police officer can not a particular individual has violated the rule; he has enough evidence to arrest them. Still, he accepts bribes and lets the suspect out to the public. This is always an issue in places where the cartel is dominant; for instance, an officer knows a specific cartel is trafficking weapons, but he agrees with the cartel to be paid a particular portion of the total cost every month. In the cases, police officers can know all the drug dealers who sell drugs that destroy the lives of many youths, but they cannot arrest them because they receive their percentage every time they threaten them (Prprović et al., 2021). The fourth type of corruption is internal pay-offs, where police officers accept to cover for their colleagues at a price. Some officers rarely report to their shifts, but they are always present. This is because they pay other officers to work for them during their change of holidays. The fifth type of police corruption is direct involvement in criminal activities. There are police officers who are both police and criminals simultaneously. There are cases where a police officer can be a ring leader of a terrorist group. In such cases, terrorism will be happening, and yet the police officers are doing nothing about it (Prprović et al 2021). Other issues are where police officers are drug traffickers or human traffickers, which is illegal according to the constitution. In such cases, police officers have another way to earn that is not legit, making them corrupt. The sixth type of police corruption is protecting the illegal act (Stickle, 2021). Police officers can be aware of unlawful actions, but they ensure that no one else knows about the business because the offenders pay them. The seventh type is a fix where police officers hide the evidence or fail to turn up for personal favors and bribery at the judiciary hearings. Police mostly do this from offenders collaborating with them in their illegal activities, protecting them (Prprović et al., 2021). You can find in some cases, an officer who had the evidence has changed their mind at the last minute and says that they do not have any idea what the court is talking about. The last type of police corruption is opportunistic theft, where police officers take advantage of a situation to take things without anyone proving them guilty.
